PATTERN NOTES
For the head and body, the increases are done using “knit front and back” (which will be abbreviated kfb). To do this, knit into the next stitch, then knit into the back of the same stitch, then take the yarn off the needle. For the ears, arms, and legs, use M1 to increase.


PATTERN

Head
CO 6 stitches. Distribute among 3 needles (you can use 4 needles once you have enough sts, if desired) and join. Place marker.
Rnd 1: K all sts.
Rnd 2: Kfb into each st. 12 sts.
Rnd 3: K all sts.
Rnd 4: kfb, k1, kfb, k1, kfb, kfb, k1, kfb, k1, kfb, k2. 18 sts.
Rnd 5: K all sts.
Rnd 6: kfb, k2, kfb, k2, kfb, k2, kfb, k2, kfb, k2, kfb, k2. 24 sts.
Rnd 7: K all sts.
Rnd 8: kfb, k3, kfb, k3, kfb, k4, kfb, k3, kfb, k3, kfb, k2. 30 sts.
Rnd 9: K all sts.

At this point, you will want to put the eyes on, embroider the nose and mouth, and stuff the head with the fiberfill. Use the diagram and directions below to place eyes and embroidery (or use your own placement!). Once this is done, stuff head so it is firm but still squeezable.
Rnd 26: ssk, k1, ssk, k1, ssk, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k2. 12 sts.
Rnd 27: K all sts.
Rnd 28: ssk, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, k2tog. 6 sts.
You can add additional fiberfill at very top of the head at this point, if desired.
Break yarn. Thread tail through rem sts, starting with st to LEFT of last st completed (ie, into the first decrease you did on that row), and pull firmly. If desired, make a small hidden knot then hide yarn end inside head. This toy will probably be handled quite a bit; although knots are generally frowned upon in knitting, it will help keep the fellow together.


Embroidery directions (see diagram)
Thread embroidery thread or yarn on yarn or tapestry needle. Bring yarn out at 1, then in at 2. Bring out at 3, then back in at 2. Then out at 4, back in at 2, then out at 5 and in at 4. Then bring it out at 2 and in at 6, then out at 7 and in at 6. Either weave in ends or (to make embroidery more secure) tie knot in back of work using both loose ends. If you do the latter, make sure not to pull too tightly, or embroidery will distort the knitted fabric.



Body
CO 20 stitches, leaving a long tail to sew body to head. Distribute among 3 or 4 needles (depending on your preference) and join. Place marker.
Rnd 1: K all sts.
Rnd 2: K9, kfb, kfb, k9. 22 sts.
Rnd 3: K all sts.
Rnd 4: K9, kfb, k2, kfb, k9. 24 sts.
Rnd 5: K all sts.
Rnd 6: K9, kfb, k4, kfb, k9. 26 sts.

Rnd 8: K9, kfb, k6, kfb, k9. 28 sts.

Rnd 4: [M1, k5] twice. 12 sts.

Rnd 11: [k2tog, k4] twice. 10 sts.
Rnd 12: K all sts.
Rnd 13: [k2tog] around. 5 sts.
Break yarn. Thread tail through rem sts and pull firmly. Tie knot if desired and hide yarn end inside ear. Weave in ends. Lay flat with increases and decreases along either side (do not stuff the ears).


Arms (make two)
CO 12 stitches, leaving a long tail to sew arm to body. Distribute among 3 needles and join. Place marker.
Rnds 1-12: K all sts.
Rnd 13: [M1, k6] twice. 14 sts.
Rnds 14-17: K all sts.
Rnd 18: [k2tog] around. 7 sts.
Break yarn. Thread tail through rem sts and pull firmly. Tie knot if desired and bring yarn inside arm. Weave in ends (not the CO tail – use that for sewing arm onto body). Stuff with fiberfill; the best method for the arms and legs is to stuff the “paw” as firmly as the head and body, then very, very lightly stuff the arm. This will keep the arms flexible enough to bend down and not stick straight out.


Legs (make two)
CO 12 stitches, leaving a long tail to sew arm to body. Distribute among 3 needles and join. Place marker.
Rnds 1-14: K all sts.
Rnd 15: [M1, k6] twice. 14 sts.
Rnds 16-19: K all sts.
Rnd 20: [k2tog] around. 7 sts.
Break yarn. Thread tail through rem sts and pull firmly. Tie knot if desired and bring yarn inside leg. Weave in ends (not the CO tail – use that for sewing leg onto body). Stuff legs with fiberfill as with arms.


FINISHING
Sew the body to the head using yarn end left when casting on. First position the body against the bottom of the head as desired, then catch the bottom of a knit “V” on the head with the needle, then come down and catch the top of an upside-down “V” on the body. That way, the seam almost disappears. Again, make a knot only if desired – it will make the seams more secure.
Sew arms and legs onto body as shown in photos. Make sure to position the arms and legs so the increases can’t be seen from the front. With the arms, I sewed up higher on the arms on the underside (ie, the second row of sts on the arm rather than the first) so the arms were angled down (if sewn at same level on arm all the way around, the arms will stick straight out).
I positioned the legs on my rabbit to work well sitting and “standing”; position them as you see fit. Sew ears on head, making sure both sides of CO edge are held flat against each other.
