A wintery wake up for your shower that's cool to look at and cool to wash with, this melt and pour soap making project uses clear soap base with blue and pearlescent colorants to make a nifty icy bar of soap.
For this project you'll need:
Clear melt and pour soap base - For this project I used 48 oz. of soap base total
A blue soap colorant, preferably clear, ideally with a mica undertone - I used Sapphire Gel Tone Colorant from SunFeather Soap Company
A white pearlescent mica colorant - I used "Polar Ice" mica from Keller Naturals
Peppermint essential oil or another "cool" or "icy" fragrance oil
A basic soap mold - my mold here makes 12 4 oz. bars
Basic melt and pour soap making equipment (measuring cup, scale, knives, whisk)
A basic understanding of Melt and Pour Soap Making

Take 4 oz. (one bar's worth) of the soap base and melt it. Add a few drops of your blue colorant until you've got a sapphire-like mid-blue. Stir gently and pour into the mold

For the white/pearl ice, we're going to need three bars - so 12 oz. of soap base. Melt it down and add about 1/4 tsp. of white/pearlescent mica to the soap. Stir well, pour into the mold and let both the white and blue bars cool.
http://z.about.com/d/candleandsoap/1/5/b/B/P1010176.JPG
Now we're going to make the slivers of soap that we'll embed into the bars. I prefer to use a knife rather than a shredder or mandolin like we did in the Morning Mint Soap project because the mandolin or shredder tends to make curled slivers rather than straight ones. While more time consuming, cut nice thin irregular slivers of both the blue and the pearlescent soap bars.
http://z.about.com/d/candleandsoap/1/5/U/B/P1010180.JPG
Divide up the blue and pearlescent slivers into your soap mold cavities. I like to keep them going mostly the same direction - but they can criss cross each other. Use your own artistic flair here
http://z.about.com/d/candleandsoap/1/5/c/B/P1010185.JPG
Take the rest of your soap base (about 32 oz.) and melt it down. Add your fragrance or essential oil to the base and stir well.
(Note: Normally I add about 3% fragrance or essential oil to the soap base, but peppermint is an especially strong essential oil, so I reduce it to about 2% - for this recipe, about .6 ounce. Use your own judgement and scent to your liking.)
Spray the arranged slivers of soap with alcohol and gently pour the melted, scented soap into the mold cavities. Give the mold a few taps to free any trapped air bubbles, or poke the slivers with a chopstick or spoon. This will also help to free any trapped air bubbles.
Set the mold aside, or pop it into the fridge to cool.

Once it's cooled, pop the bars out of the molds and enjoy!
Variations:
Hot hot you the final melted soap base(uncolored) is when you pour will determine how much "running" of the colors you get. If you pour cool, the slivers should stay intact. If you pour it hotter, some of the slivers will start to melt and the color will sort of "drift" through the bar - an interesting effect.
Using a paint brush, dab a little more of the mica either onto the slivers or into the mold itself, like we did in the Gem Stones project
Instead of just blue, use a combination of blue and green. Or for some "Fire and Ice" use red or orange colorant!
Use a mandolin or shredder to make curled embeds instead of straight
Chop the blue slivers into tiny chunks, leaving the pearl ones long - they'll look almost like little crystals among the ice slivers
That's the fun with melt and pour soap - you can be creative and let your imagination run wild. Enjoy
